Chapter 11

Do you believe that teaching is an Art of a Science?

  1. I definitely beleive that theaching is an art. Not everyone can deal with the constraints of teaching. Some teachers force the issue at times, when maybe they should look for other means of employment. Teaching is one of the most important jobs of today. We mold the minds of the future of our society. It takes heart, endurance, tears, and self driven motivation to do the job.

  2. I believe that teaching is an art. Teachers go well beyond what is expected of them to ensure that our youth's needs are being met. We have to be mentors and role models for these children and provide the best education for them. We have to make sure that we keep students motivated and interested in learning and help them overcome whatever they are experiencing at home. This takes a lot of strength for teachers to endure and a lot of heart and dedication.

  3. Teaching is an art of Science! Some it comes naturally, and others really have to work at it. Like a fine wine, it becomes better (hopefully not worse) with age as a result of education and experience. I need to note that veteran teachers must keep up with new methods and technology to remain on top!

  4. Think there was a typo. Art or Science? Combination of both.

  5. Teaching is a art (and some days I feel like a starving artist). However I do believe you can learn the art of teaching

  6. I believe teaching is definitely a art. Creativity is a must. You have to be able to see each new situation in a way that others may not.

  7. It takes a very special person to do the job we as educators do everyday. I believe that teaching is an art because we need to be creative in order to produce active learners who will love learning. We must also create new ways to make learning fun for students. These don't happen without an imagination and creativity.

  8. I believe that teaching is an art. A good teacher is creative and utilizes a variety of approaches. I think that subject matter can be learned as a science, but a good teachers are just born to do that job.

  9. I believe teaching is a combination of both. A good teacher is always thinking of creative new ways to do things. However, some teachers claim to have teaching their particular subjects down to a science. I'm not sure that is such a good thing!

  10. I am going to have to say both. You have to be craftful in the way you teach (art), but there are also times where you have to learn from your mistakes, chalk it up as a bad experience and move on (science).

  11. I believe that teaching is a calling. It is an art because it requires mastery. Anyone can teach, but not everyone can be good at it. It is also a science, because it requires constant experimentation.

  12. Teaching is an art. Creativity is a necessary element in the classroom. Just like an artist creates a master piece, we as educators create master pieces for the future.

  13. I also believe that teaching is an art. It takes creativity and ingenuity. It's a science, as well, because we don't have all the answers. It is a process that must be continuously worked on in order to achieve what's best for your students.

  14. I feel that teaching is an art - you can learn all you want to about being a good teacher, but that is not what makes you a good teacher. I feel that you are born to be a teacher and there is no amount of book-learning that can make you an outstanding teacher. You can either do it, or you can't.

  15. Donna Fortune
I believe that it is an art because it requires people to pull from their heart to be a truly great teacher. It's also like science because you learn from your mistakes and constantly are predicting what the outcome of your instruction will be.

  16. Teaching has characteristics of being a art mainly because it is dealing with people. There is not a set of procedures that can make you a great teacher. That being said, there are definitely parts of being a teacher that having good solid techniques and procedures can help to make you an effective teacher. So if I was backed into a corner, I would have to say its a social science.

  17. Teaching is a combination of both to me. A teacher must be creative or learn to be. We don't have everything at our finger tips to teach so many different types of learners with. So we must make and become artist in the way we help each student in our classrooms. I also feel one must be a science. One must be knowledgeable in the subject given. It is a trial and error days and weeks, and a teacher is always learning.

  18. I think teaching is an art. As an artist, one needs to be creative and good teachers stimulate students to learn. However, just as Carolyn says, one must be knowledgeable in the subject given.

  19. I believe that teaching is both an art and a science. I believe that to be a teacher, one must actually want to teach students and to see them succeed. It is up to the teacher as to how they teach and teachers are given a free range of creativity in how they teach their standards. I believe teaching is also a science because teachers must have knowledge of their content that they teach. Not everyone can teach each and every subject.

  20. Another discussion question could be, do students learn more/better from the artist or the scientist? I think you have to be careful how you define "art" and science." I don't think our text fleshed that out well enough. Looking at Oliva's discussion, you might not wish to include yourself among those who feel teachers are scientists...

  21. Teaching is an art. When one thinks of a science, a precise method and solution is suggested. In teaching, one is working with individuals with unique characteristice and learning styles. No one prescribed method works for every student -- not like in science. In science, the same results are expected every time an experiment is completed, or the experiment is not considered a success. Not so with teaching. Success can be attained through various methods, by various means, and through various mediums. One must truly be creative, as well, in order to reach each individual; thus, in my estimation, teaching is an art.

  22. I think teaching is an art. You can be taught what techniques to use to be a effective teacher, but you have to be able to deliver those techniques in a creative way the engages your students.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I definitely feel like teaching is an art. Everyone can not be teachers. I was reading in the book that a teacher must be able to notice student's facial expressions. That is an art. When I look at some of my students, I know if they are sick, hurting, or need a hug. I can't explain why, I just do. I think that many teachers are blessed with the "just know" skill that is built-in.

    ReplyDelete
  24. YES! The art of teaching just comes natural. Being able to teach in a way no one else can, is special in itself. I definitely believe that teachers are a "special breed" of people.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I see both elements in teaching in general, but good teachers treat it like an art- being spontaneous, creative, thoughtful, and personal.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with what many have said. It is an art in that it takes a creative person to teach. Anytime you deal with people, especially, ages 4-18 you are going to have to be able to hold their attention, engage them and guide them to think. It is a challenge for your average person. So... I believe teaching is more of an art.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I believe that it is an art. I think that there needs to be a talent to do it but that there is a need to have what we do rooted in research so that it can be measured in some fashion. It helps to have a scientific aspect so that different kinds of people can appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think teaching is both an art and a science. You are holding attention, motivating our future, entertaining and engaging while teaching iniversal facts and methods in math, science, history and reading.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow, for me, that is a hard one to answer. Teaching is a gift, which can be Art and Science related. To be an effective instructional leader, one must possess the art of teaching. Some are just born to teach, others are not. then, those that have the gift of an effective teacher, must have the ability to incorporate the science of applying the resources,k strategies, and knowledge as outlined in one's curriculum effectively in order to lead students to success.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree that teaching is certainly an art. In college, you learn what you need to become a teacher. It is not until you get a job that you realize all the things they didn't teach you. And just because you have a degree does not make you a "good teacher". That takes time, and sometimes that never happens.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Without a doubt it is both. A teacher needs to hone his or her craft in order to reach all students, however, in the age of Standardized Testing he or she should have proven methods that work in order to get students to pass the "TEST".

    ReplyDelete
  32. Teaching is most definitely an art. Creativity is a must when being a teacher. Just as Luke said, teachers need to enhance their own craft in order in interest students in what is being taught.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, I believe it is an art. The teachers that I observe that I feel are truly exceptional have a chemistry with their student and also present material in such a dynamic way that it can only be expressed as an art. I also believe that there is a bit of learned habits. I can't draw but I can trace, that doesn't make me an artist but I can mimic the act of being an artist!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that teaching is a fair combination of both. You need to have a superior knowledge of your subject matter (science). You need to have a flair for delivery of the subject matter, the ability to convey the information in a way that is meaningful and relevent, and the creativity to change it up (art).

    ReplyDelete
  35. I believe that teaching is an art that uses the application of science. It definitely helps to be in possession of knowledge of the subject matter. In addition, knowledge of teaching methods, learning styles, etc. will help. But it doesn't matter how much some people know, they still can't teach. Some people just have a knack for making learning fun, and that is art.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I most certainly agree that teaching is an Art of a Science. Someone who is an artist has a talent that not everyone can grasp. It takes a special person to be an artist. Like an artist, not everyone can be a teacher. It takes a special individual to put the pieces of the puzzle together to help young individuals learn.

  37. Teaching is an art. It's understanding what to do, when to do, how to do it, and mostly, why it's important and necessary. Not everyone can do that. It's taking that shapeless lump of clay and sculpting it into a beautiful masterpiece!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I believe that teaching is an art and we have to be creative and think out of the box as teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Teaching is an art, but I'm an ENFJ, so I would say that. There are lots of good scientific ways to be strong teachers, but the most affective ways draw all of us in as learners by their beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Teaching is an art. Some people are just born to be teachers and it is a gift given from above.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe that teaching is both. Teachers are often times inherently gifted in both their subject matter as well as in taking a personal interest in their students; however, in order to perfect one's craft teachers must not over look the science and methodology behind the art of engaging students and creating an optimal learning environment.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think there are elements of both. To be a great teacher is an art. To be a proficient teacher is a science.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think that teaching is more so an art rather than a science. I don't believe that there is one perfect way to teach a class, just the same as there is no perfect way to write a poem or paint a picture. I feel that a science consists of certainty or black and white, while teaching can be done sucessfully in many ways and involves quite a bit of gray area.
